Towards responsible AI in local journalism (AI in Journalism)

This international and interdisciplinary project develops prototypes of responsible AI applications in collaboration with local news media and examines conditions that promote the responsible development and use of AI applications in local journalism.

This project is supported by the Volkswagen Foundation.

Description of the project

The decline of local news provision is a key challenge for democratic societies. AI applications for various activities along the news value chain offer local news media new opportunities to better address their economic and societal challenges. For reasons of social responsibility, AI applications in local journalism should not only increase economic efficiency but also contribute to local media’s democratic role in society by adhering to professional values and ethical standards.
Against this background, we are pursuing the following main goals in this international and interdisciplinary project: 1) In collaboration with local news organizations in Germany and the Netherlands, we are developing prototypes of responsible AI applications as part of design thinking projects. 2) We investigate intra- and inter-organizational as well as societal conditions that enable the responsible development and use of AI in local journalism. 3) We communicate our results at academic conferences and industry events and thus contribute to knowledge transfer.
